Information
Definitely the class act of Bulgaria's purpose-built resorts, Dyuni is a stylish, Austrian-designed (1987) vacation village popular with Dutch, French and German families. Consisting of five mini-complexes of contrasting, yet complementary, architectural styles, the modular villa apartments which sleep four ($80, tel 05514-488, reservations ext 3019) feature traditional-looking "Sozopol houses" and more modem "Alepou fishermen's huts." The complexes incorporate restaurants and shops and are spaced around the pine-forested hillside. There is also a large campground, several swimming pools, seven tennis courts, and a full range of amenities. Just to the north is the Pelican hotel (230 rooms, $90 double, $69 single, includes breakfast). Across the main road, tucked away at the northern end of the beach, is the Marina Club Village (same prices as Pelican), which opened in 1990. With an eye-catching architectural blend of traditional Mediterranean and Bulgarian monastery styles, the hotel complex (and restaurant Bisser) is as pricy as it looks - especially for non-package travelers - although the swallows which build their nests beneath the overhanging room balconies presumably do so rent-free.
Dyuni's three-kilometer-long beach is as impressive as the accommodations around it. At the north end, a breakwater running parallel to the beach provides an area of calm shallow water ideal for getting the hang of windsurfing or sailing (rentals and instruction available). Venturing beyond its protective confines, the experienced (or hapless novice) surfer or sailor will encounter the full brunt of wind and waves.
Heading south from Dyuni, the road runs straight for several kilometers before turning inland. This stretch of highway, one of the coast's most scenic, passes between a long undeveloped sandy beach on the left and the extensive Alepou swamp on the right. The swampy lagoon hosts a plethora of resident and migratory fauna as evidenced by the cacophony of bird, animal, and insect sounds arising from it. The sand dunes on the beach side bear a profusion of sand lilies. During the spring, a colorful riot of wild flowers, highlighted by bright red poppies, blankets both sides of the road (almost obscuring the litter flung from passing cars). Shortly after the road cuts inland, it passes a turn-off marked "Ropotamo Complex." Construction on the complex was halted years ago, leaving a ghostly collection of a dozen partially-completed concrete buildings. Just offshore is tiny Saint Thomas Island (also known as "Snake Island" but, despite the name, it's not infested), famous for its cacti that adapted some 60 years ago. The isolated spot offers a hard-to-resist opportunity to shed one's clothes on the mainland and make the short swim over to the deserted island for a respite of sunbathing on the rocky shore.
A half-kilometer south of the complex the main road passes by another swamp, the Arkutino. Originating from the designated parking lot on the left, walking trails meander among sun-seared and scrub-covered sand dunes in all stages of their development, from formation to assimilation by trees and vegetation. The area is also the greatest habitat of the sea daffodil, a small flower whose roots penetrate several meters into the sand. Beyond is a thickly wooded area and lagoon, which floating white lilies and yellow roses share with ducks, otter, heron - and mosquitoes. Perhaps the best vantage point from which to view the swamp and surrounding terrain is from Vessela skala (Merry Rock), an overlook above the highway a kilometer south of Arkutino. An easy, five-minute hike up a developed trail leads to the overlook from where one can soak up the sights and sounds emanating from below.
